    2009 Summer Season at the bandstand is nearly over

    July 24
    The Orange Community Band will perform the fifth in its series of six Friday evening concerts on the bandstand on East River Street on July 24, at 7:30 pm. Stephanie Parker will conduct the program, sponsored by Time Warner Cable. Tim Sweeney is Master of Ceremonies.

    These free public concerts have been a tradition during the summer in Orange since the 1850's, and continue to be a special pleasure for community residents. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and come visit with your neighbors as they enjoy this special summer treat.

    The program Friday will include a variety of show tunes, traditional band pieces and marches, including marches Gloria, Zacatecas, Bombasto, and Military Escort; Concert goers will recognize the Dixie favorite When the Saints Go Marchin' In, and the pop favorite, I Write the Songs. The movies gave us Hooray for Hollywood; All Shook Up; and Soul Bossa Nova; Other selections on the program may include Meadowlands; Jupiter, from The Planets; and Maelstrom.

    The band auxiliary will be offering hot dogs, popcorn, baked goods, coffee and soda, with proceeds going to the band music fund. Hamshaw Lumber provides the popcorn popper, and coffee is donated by Deans' Beans. Clarinets and saxophones will bake for the concession stand this week.

    Other concerts this season have been sponsored by Ames Trophy, Orange Post 172 American Legion, the Lyman and Kilhart families and Nursie Perkins in memory of Freeland and Tom. The final concert July 31 is Memory Night, sponsored by Witty's Funeral Home. Memory Night this year will be dedicated to Erle C. “Brud” Witty.

    The Orange Community Band will perform its final concert of the summer season, Memory Night, on Friday evening, July 31 at 7:30 pm in Butterfield Park on East River Street. Witty's Funeral Home is the sponsor of Memory Night, and this year will dedicate the concert to the memory of Erle C. "Brud" Witty.

    Sean Wallace, Music Director at Athol-Royalston High School will be guest conductor for the evening. He is a native of Derry New Hampshire, and is playing is several area Community Bands this summer, including Greenfield and Narragansett. The program will consist of a number of old favorites, including marches, show tunes, and popular favorites. Some of the possibilities include marches Invictus and Washington Post, Manhattan Tower Overture, Someone to Watch Over Me, Hymn to Joy, Mancini Spectacular, What a Wonderful World, Highlights from South Pacific, and two pieces that were played often by the old Minute Tapioca Band, The Rosary and In a Persian Market. During the evening concert goers may make donations to the Orange Community Band Music Fund, dedicated to the memory of loved ones. Master of Ceremonies Tim Sweeney will mention those names between selections by the band.

About OCB

The Orange Community Band performs a series of six summer concerts on the bandstand in Orange’s Butterfield Park, Membership in the band is open to all musicians of high school age or above who are willing to commit to attendance at rehearsals and attendance for the entire season. The band also performs an indoor pops concert each spring, with a longer series of rehearsals. A delegation from the Orange Community Band also performs in the River Rat Parade in April and the October Harvest Festival Parade, as well as for the arrival of Santa Claus in Orange the Friday after Thanksgiving. Interested musicians should contact an officer of the band and should plan to attend rehearsals for the summer.

Sponsorship:
The Orange Community Band is self-funding, through the proceeds from the Pops Concert Advertising booklet, and from sponsorship of summer concerts. Hats are available for $12 from the Orange Community Band A concert sponsorship is $400, and may be split between two individuals or groups. Contact Maureen Riendeau for more information on sponsorship.

The band has Orange Community Band hats available for sale, at a cost of $12, adjustable size fits all. These may be purchased at the band concerts or contact for information.
